Parking Rituals
Parking Rituals is a site-specific installation carried out in a deserted parking garage at Espoon Keskus. It is fueled by rhythmic lighting sequences and monotonic soundscape mantras echoing in an empty and hazy urban space. The installation guides a fully committed viewer through a purifying trance with the use of different technological medium. Psychologically, the process of trance is often construed as a state of mind caused by cognitive loops. Repeating an intentional action long enough results in various sets of disabled cognitive functions temporarily, making room for suggestion. This is the psychological mechanism Parking Rituals utilizes to launch a spirit quest. Between the parking lot striping lies the question: what kind of mysticism and transcendental spiritualism fits into the built environment? Is it possible to initiate a trance-like state through automation?
