Kids and youth are one of the most important parts of communities, but how often are their views taken into real account in public space? Community artwork Sotkamo Maps is part of Reflektor’s Muksut Mäppää artwork series, where kids and students are given the platform to express themselves as equal part of the festival’s artist lineup. Muksut Mäppää is a long-term initiative by Reflektor, which has already involved a total of 1,500 children. Sotkamo Maps is done in collaboration with the schools in Sotkamo.
Sotkamo Maps considers nature far and near. Overall theme ‘Plants and Animals’ inspired thinking of different forms of nature. The original artworks were done in drawing workshops as part of the school’s art lessons. The schools and students were allowed to interpret the overall theme. In the final stage the original artworks are given a larger-than-life scale – making them impossible to ignore.
