Jaakko Mattila Solo exhibition, 2026
Visual artist and painter Jaakko Mattila (b. 1976, Oulu) lives and works in Helsinki. After graduating from The Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College in London his works have been exhibited internationally in galleries and institutions in Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and France. Mattila has done several public sculptures and his work is held in various prestigious collections including Sara Hildén Art Museum and the state of Finland.
Mattila’s works embody the behavior of light and the limits of human perception. The unique language of the works in the exhibition is formed through a detailed examination of light, nature, and illusions. The artworks serve as visual studies of infinity, scale, and time, challenging the viewer’s way of perceiving the world and revealing what remains beyond the reach of the human eye. Mattila uses various techniques in his works, including watercolour, printmaking, oil paint, alkyd, and sculpture. The scale of the works vary from minute to monumental.
The recurring patterns and shapes in Mattila’s works can be considered building blocks of the universe: fundamental states of nature that repeat timelessly and consistently across the micro- and macrocosm. The recurring symbolism throughout his body of work remains timeless and open to an endless rhizome of meanings and connections.
The exhibition is a sales exhibition. Further information regarding the purchase and pricing of the artworks is available from the exhibition staff. The exhibition is held at Aatos- building in Sotkamo as part of the Reflektor Sotkamo 2026 festival lineup.
